Winner of the Copenhagen Cycle Chic & Velorbis Climate Conference Gorgeousness Competition

Velorbis Studine winner Copenhagen Cycle Chic4

In December we ran a competition with Copenhagen Cycle Chic to win a gloriously red and cream Velorbis Studine bicycle.  The competition was open to all foreign guests in Copenhagen during COP15.

The competition question: How will you personally commit to a better environment IN STYLE with this bicycle if you win it?

Congratulations to Lauren from San Francisco who is now the proud owner of her Velorbis Studine. Her winning answer was “Hej Studinealiciousness, let us push off together, me, a blur of neutral grace, heels leaving no carbon footprint, and you, my fiery, functional, fabulous muse.”

Check out these photos of Lauren by Copenhagen Cycle Chic, the epitome of cycle chic on her Velorbis Studine out and about in wintry Copenhagen. Velorbis featured in Australian Cyclist’s Pedal Paradise

Australian Cyclist_cover Jan-Feb 2010

Velorbis was featured in this great article in the latest issue of Australian Cyclist about urban cycling in Australia, and how Copenhagen cycling culture is influencing this movement and investment in future infrastructure.

Pedal Paradise by Robin Barton talks about "Jan Gehl, the 74 year-old godfather of bike friendly urban design was at the forefront of Copenhagen’s transformation. Now consulted by cities from Melbourne, Perth and Sydney to New York and London on how they can be more like Copenhagen."

The Australian Cyclist article also talks about how cycling can give a sense of community: "I think people are aware it gives them quality of life. They can move about the city in a different way. They can be part of city life. They can dress themselves in the city." A lovely way of thinking and a concept that Velorbis endorses.

Copenhagen voted cool 2010 destination by NY Times

New York Times logo

We're really pleased to see that wonderful Copenhagen has been voted number 5 in The New York Times' recent list: "The 31 Places to Go in 2010".

It must be all the hip people, green initiatives, fantastic architecture and of course stunning bicycles!

The NY Times says "The Danish capital has already emerged as one of the world’s greenest — and maybe coolest — cities. Copenhageners don’t simply preach the “progressive city” ethos, they live it. Long, flat urban thoroughfares are hemmed with bicycle paths where locals glide around the city."

Copenhagen sits alongside other illustrious and inspirational locations such as Sri Lanka, Patagonia Wine country, Los Angeles and Shanghai amongst others.

VeloCast review of Velorbis Churchill Balloon

Check out the latest review, pics and podcast of the Velorbis Churchill Balloon gents bike on VeloCast.

Scott; one of the VeloCasters took our regally funky gents model for a spin in beautiful Scotland: “But all the talk of the smooth ride, the hand built frame, or the intelligent use of components really doesn’t sum up the feeling you get from riding this bike.  Velorbis have managed to do that rarest of things: create a bike that is greater than the sum of its parts.  The experience of riding the Churchill Balloon just makes you happy.  Happy to be out in the fresh air and happy to be on this bike.  Suddenly all is well with the world and you find yourself smiling.”

Churchill Balloon was also a topic point in VeloCast's Episode 59 podcast where the team were joined by Jeff Helfand from Veloreviews.com. The team also discussed bike sharing schemes with a difference, Lance Armstrong’s mind games and other cycling-related news.

Thanks to Scott and John for the rave reviews.

Velorbis bikes becoming even more popular in North America

Cycle and Style banner

We spotted this good article – “Going Dutch” by Cycle and Style, the online women's magazine bringing together cycling, style and health.

The article talks about how Dutch-style bicycles from Europe, such as Velorbis, are making an impact across the 'pond’ and are fast becoming a high trend must-have item with a core following by style savvy, health conscious consumers.

“The bicycles put their riders in the kind sitting-up-straight position that your mother taught you was best. It is an elegant position—a way to survey the streetscape around you in comfort. A girl can easily wear high heels, a dress and a past-the-knees coat as she pedals off to work, to school or to the café down the street for lunch with friends.”

The article also talks about the number of classic bike stockists which are rising up throughout the US and Canada, in particular Copenhagen Cyclery, the European upright bike specialist and Velorbis dealer in Chicago.

This increase in availability means that it’s now even easier in North America to enjoy a Velorbis “'Copenhagen Chic’ look that will have you commuting in style”, such as with the Velorbis Victoria Classic or Dannebrog retro ladies bikes that are included in the article.

Velorbis and chic cycling style in Ireland

Velorbis recently took part at the Cycle Chic Fashion Show at Cork City Hall, Ireland; the event where cycling, fashion and design were entwined as one concept.

The Cycle Chic Fashion Show, held annually during Design Week in Ireland, effectively showcased cycling culture and highlighted just how practical, green and affordable cycling is as a green transportation option. It reflected the spirit and street style from the cycling capitals of the world such as Copenhagen where cycling is an integrated part of everyday life and an essential accessory for contemporary, healthy living.

On display was a selection of Velorbis bicycle treats: our fire-engine red Dannebrog classic ladies bike, funky Scrap Deluxe ladies bicycle and our urban retro Churchill Balloon gents bike with brown Fat Frank tyres.

The influence and popularity of chilled-out cycle culture, carbon conscious travel and urban commuting is growing amongst the environmentally aware, fashion-forward people of Ireland. Velorbis is catering for this demand by linking up with Thinkbike, the new Velorbis dealer in Dublin, Ireland.

Thanks to the Cycle Chic Fashion Show for a great event. Welcome on board Thinkbike!

Good Magazine New Zealand review of 'thoroughbred’ Velorbis Dannebrog

Velorbis Dannebrog classic ladies bicycle

We came across this nice review of the Velorbis Dannebrog ladies bicycle by Su Yin Khoo in the article "The ultimate cycle chic: test-riding a Velorbis bicycle” in Good Magazine, New Zealand’s answer to sustainable living.

"And boy did the Dannebrog turn heads! Motorists can't help but admire the sexy beast when I pedal past—probably wishing they weren't stuck in traffic being subjected to cheesy music on the radio.”

We’re pleased to hear Su Yin Khoo was “riding like a royal – and enjoying it” on our red bicycle beauty Dannebrog.

London Cycle Chic proclaims Velorbis Studine Balloon the easyrider of bikes

Velorbis Studine Balloon retro ladies bicycle by London Cycle Chic

Thanks to our friends at London Cycle Chic for their great review - Velorbis’s easyrider: The Studine Balloon - and for the gorgeous new promotional photo above.

Our Studine Balloon retro ladies bike is a simplified version of our popular Scrap Deluxe top model. It is no less iconic or funky that it’s premium sister. A gents version, Student Balloon, is also available.

London Cycle Chic say “The Studine Balloon is a bike that will make you smile. It's the latest from Velorbis, the experts in elegant bicycles. What I love about this bike is the mix of old and new. It has the basic design of a classic Dutch bike but with a modern, edgy twist.

There is an undoubtable coolness about this bike, it attracts attention and gets eyed up like a girl in a short skirt. What makes a Velorbis bike so special is the design.”

We love it when people get as excited and as passionate about our bikes as we do.

Velorbis interview in The Independent on Sunday Magazine’s Copenhagen feature

Check out this inspiring article in The Independent on Sunday Magazine by Robin Barton on 18th October 2009. “On your bike: What the world can learn about cycling from Copenhagen”, talks about how Copenhagen is bursting with eco-friendly solutions that the world’s leaders would benefit from taking a closer look at when they arrive in the city for COP15, the UN’s Climate Change Conference in December.

Whilst in Copenhagen the journalist, Robin Barton, stopped by the Velorbis flagship store for a visit and an interview with Velorbis founding partner Ken Bødiker.  Robin writes the following about Velorbis...

”Surprisingly, for a city with as many bicycles as people, Copenhagen's most fashionable bike company began life in London.  He'd noticed that his native Copenhagen had something to export to London: a culture of urban cycling. Three years later and Bødiker has opened a flagship store in sedate Frederiksberg and exports his German-made town bikes to the UK, US and Australia.

He lends me a Scrap Deluxe, a pepped-up, Dutch-style model with lights, mudguards, a rack and kickstand that counts Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers among its owners, and I set off to discover how Copenhagen is offering a vision of the 21st-century city.

The article also talks about urban sustainability in various areas of the city and Copenhagen cycling culture in general. Read The Independent on Sunday article in full.
